Celebrating Fall© Kim Martin
Oct 15, 2003
Fall is our favorite time of year! We love going back to school, turning back the clocks and watching the colors of nature change.
Fall is also the time for some very diverse cultural celebrations: Yom Kippur, Canadian Thanksgiving Day, Oktoberfest, Halloween, Dia de los Muertos, and All Saints day on November 1st.
I have always taught Wyatt the importance of respecting others' beliefs. He has a few Jewish and Latino/a friends who teach him all about their family's beliefs and celebrations. I believe that the world is our classroom and we can learn from each and every person with whom we come into contact. Never hesitate to take opportunities to be a student of the world and have fun embracing the unknown! Stop by the following sites to learn more about an unfamiliar celebration and share it with your family.
Yom Kippur Activities:
I was directed to these activity web pages by parents who recognize this Jewish holiday. Holiday Family Activities and Thought for Yom Kippur is a simple site offereing ideas for the family to enjoy during this time of fasting and reflection. Activities for Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur is a nice site with several ideas for the family. I liked seeing the Jewish writing and artwork found on this site.
Yom Kippur Family Fun is an activity site. It has good directions on how to explain the holiday to younger children who might have a hard time understanding the meaning of the special day.
Canadian Thanksgiving Activities:
Enjoy Thanksgiving is a beautifully designed site that gives a history of the holiday and photographs illustrating Canada's stunning country.
Informational sections include:
- Canadian Thanksgiving
- Thanksgiving Activities Especially for Teachers
- Thanksgiving Activities Sites for Everyone
- Thanksgiving Feasts
Thanksgiving Day has some neat ideas for kids. There are links to other Canadian Thanksgiving pages along with greeting card ideas.
Oktoberfest Activities:
Children can have fun learning about Germany's eclectic culture by visiting any numbe of sites devoted to the country. Most of the sites related to Oktoberfest pertained to adults. Wyatt and I had fun doing the following while we researched Germany:
- learned how to count to 10 in German
- learned the German alphabet and a few phrases
- tasted bratwurst
- learned how to make a German frankfurter
- danced to "oom-pa-pa" music
- visted Old World (a small re-creation of a German village in Huntington Beach, CA.)
Our Favorite Halloween Activities:
- make pumpkin playdough (recipe follows list)
- make pumpkin muffins
- make pumpkin pie
