Our Summer So Far...

© Kim Martin

August is coming to an end faster than I expected! Wyatt and I definitely enjoyed our summer, even though it was a change from summers past.

What Was New & Different

I started a new job as a Day Camp Director for a nearby city and Wyatt returned to his day care and made new friends. Since I was working full-time this summer, we really didn't have the chance to go on a "real" vacation, so we settled for destinations close to home and enjoyed ourselves-- big time.

Summer Reading...

Wyatt participated in two reading programs. One was set up through our local library. They gave each child who signed up, a reading chart to log the minutes they spent reading. After so many minutes logged, the children were able to get small incentives such as gift certificates from local fast food joints or small toy prizes. When his chart was full, he was able to pick out a book to keep!
The other program was through Barnes & Noble. He read 8 books. He had to write about his favorite part from each book. He turned it in and received a free book from them!
I completed Harry Potter V "The Order of the Phoenix" and loved it!! This is a must-read for all kids and adults. I suggest a family read-along so everyone can take turns reading aloud.

Around the House

We took the time to clean and re-arrange Wyatt's bedroom. He sold some toys and video games and was able to buy himself an inexpensive DVD player from Target ($39.99)! He was so proud of himself!
I registered for fall classes at the University and was able to get financial aid to help me this semester. I'm only 2 years away from having my B.A. in Liberal Studies and my California Teaching Credential!

Visiting

Wyatt also spent time at a few of his classmates homes. He really enjoyed seeing his friends outside of school. I was so thankful as well. It gave me time to get cleaning and other boring stuff done while he was away.
Here's a run-down of activities and fun that kept us occupied this summer:

Long Beach Aquarium

One rule I, as a single parent, always resort to when I want to treat Wyatt to amusement parks or other costly attractions is to LOOK FOR THE DISCOUNT TICKETS! I clip coupons, return cans, send in surveys, whatever it takes to get the discount.
