Celebrating Mother's Day

I want to wish everyone a very Happy Mother’s Day. All single moms, the never married, the separated, the widow – I hope you have a great Mother’s Day.

As single moms we don’t always get the recognition we deserve, so go ahead and pat yourself on the back. Take this day to rest, relax or recreate. Splurge on something for yourself if your children are too young to do something special for you. If you know another single mom, swap kids and have each child buy or build something for the other mother. Married moms can usually count on dads taking the kids and doing something special for mom, but we don’t usually have that kind of support from the father of our kids, so we need to find creative ways to pamper ourselves.

It is a pity that the single mom isn’t given the credit she deserves by the popular press. The press sometimes works overtime at being insensitive and judgmental. This is just one example. The link is to an article that appeared in the Orlando Sentinel.

If you are prone to high blood pressure, don’t read it. This woman, Kathleen Parker, had the unmitigated gall to state that it is “good thing” to call children born out of wedlock bastards. THIS IS AN EXACT QUOTE TAKEN FROM HER ARTICLE.

"In the span of a generation, we've gone from calling the offspring of unwed mothers “bastards” (this is a good thing) to celebrating unwed motherhood as a rite of passage for liberated women (a bad thing)."

When I contacted her about it via email, her defense was, I “misread her”. Given the exact quote above, it is hard to imagine that there is ANY room for “misinterpretation”.

The rest of her article is basically a rant against single moms (never married ones). It makes me wonder why it is okay to level this kind of hatred against single moms and their children. Think about it for a minute, would the Orlando Sentinel let her publish an article of hatred using such horrible slurs against other groups of people. Imagine the press using nasty terms against Jewish people, African Americans, or homosexuals – it simply would NOT happen. Children born out of wedlock do not deserve labels such as “bastard”, any more than any other group of people deserves to be slandered.

Remind this narrow-minded woman that our children will one day be her: banker, doctor, pharmacist, mechanic, hair stylist, dentist or florist. Our children, yes, our “children” – not “bastards” as she would call them. When she is old and in a nursing home, it may well be one of our children that takes care of her. If you are an adult, who was born out of wedlock, let the paper and this woman know what you think about her cold, cruel words.
