Father's Rights - Part 1

The father's rights movement deliberately misuses statistics to paint a completely inaccurate picture of the importance of fathers. There is NO definitive study, which supports the idea that fathers are essential, and many which indicate they are not essential. Further, the only truly "fatherless" children are those of widows, and these children do not end up with all of the supposedly negative outcomes (illegitimacy, incarceration, dropouts) that the father's rights movement claims are attributable to the MERE ABSENCE of fathers. Academics with an understanding of statistics know and have proven through analysis that the single biggest predictor of the outcomes mentioned above is this: POVERTY. Poverty which is compounded by the failure of many of these same men to pay child support.

Additionally, we can safely assume that in many of cases, while these fathers were in the home, there was a lot of problems because of their PRESENCE (otherwise these women wouldn't be divorcing them in the first place! Women initiate most divorces.) Problems such as: gambling, incarceration, alcoholism, emotional and physical abuse, created a severly dysfunctional home. Women divorce to get their children away from these problems. What the father's rights movement is ignoring is the fact that these fathers WERE in their children's lives for SOME period of time and THAT may be the VERY reason their kids end up with problems!! In many cases, keeping these "bad dads" in the child's life will ONLY guarantee MORE negative outcomes. We know that there is an extremely high correlation between a child being incarcerated in the future and his FATHER being incarcerated!!! The father's rights groups completely dismiss any possible role that fathers played (during the marriage - while they were present in the home) in how their children turn out. Instead they blame everything on the father absence and the presence of the single mom.

This movement is directly responsible for a change in philosophy of the importance of mothers. In order to elevate themselves, the special bond between mothers and children has been denigrated. This movement has resulted in women losing custody of their children at a level unparalleled since prior to the doctrine of the Tender Years.

It is responsible for women who have been victims of domestic violence losing custody to known, proven abusers. (NOTE: I am not talking about vague - he said, she said cases.) There is fast becoming a "sick" presumption that women are all
