Raising daughters.explain things and give them to her in case any other girls might want one. My child didn't know I would return, so she wasn't aware I was there when I came back. I casually observed her as she was sitting in her seat. She just looked so little and lost - sitting there sort of hunched over. Not at all, how I usually see her. She is usually strong and confident - playful and feisty. Now, I don't know if it is just the circumstance of today (first day at middle school) that is making her appear less confident, but I am concerned about her ability to stand up to girls like these. What a morning! I don't know how I am going to get thru the next 9 years because this is really just the tip of the iceberg! I was reading a book over the weekend, all about middle school and high school cliques and "girl" behavior. The book "Queen Bees and Wannabees" is a non-fiction book by Rosalind Wiseman based upon years of research with girls. It was the basis of the recent movie "Mean Girls". From what I have read, the girls can be absolutely vicious. Wow! It is every cliché about how mean, underhanded and vicious women can be and apparently this kind of behavior is a fact of life for our daughters. This saddens me greatly, because it is just so unnecessary, and I can't protect my daughter from it. According to this book, the girls are downright mean to each other and very manipulative. I suddenly feel like I have thrown my dear, sweet daughter to the wolves. If the little transaction we had this morning with these girls typifies the rest of the year - it will be one long battle after another to stand up to them. I now so completely understand people who home school their children. I find myself wishing I were in a position to do just that. Unfortunately, as a single mom - home schooling is utterly impossible. The best I can do is use the very helpful information (lots of tips) in this book to get thru these difficult years and act as an anchor for my daughter. I highly recommend this book for anyone struggling with raising a daughter in these difficult years!
