Sorry kids, but it's just a myth, I'm not Superman

I have often remarked that I thought our society had educated itself beyond common sense. We became so enlightened with theories on new approaches to child rearing that somewhere along the way we lost sight of the fact that discipline was working. Yes, both at home and at school, a good old-fashioned kick in the butt was turning out some pretty good kids. You might argue that the only reason children showed respect, or did their homework, or never missed school, was out of fear. Well, so what! Was that really a bad thing? Is it any different than the lesson society tries to teach them now only after they are practically grown? Why do you think the courtrooms are full of teenagers now? It's because they have been empowered their whole life by society with little fear of having to account for their actions only to grow up and find out the rules have changed.

When did the rules for discipline change in this country and who were the childless idiots that thought this up? Schools are afraid to discipline, parents are afraid to discipline. Children begin deciding on their own at very early ages whether or not they want to go to school. I hate to pick on my home state but North Carolina has frustrated me greatly as a parent. In this state if your teenager decides not to go to school, the parent is held accountable but given no recourse to force the child to go. Eventually, the child that doesn't want to go to school is kicked out and no longer has to go. This, according to officials, is punishment. What punishment? The kid didn't want to go in the first place! Until the child is an adult, the parent continues to be legally and financially responsible for everything short of murder the child does. In this state a child can legally quit school at age 16. Why? The child cannot vote, support them-self as an adult, join the service, etc. Why for the love of God is it okay for them to quit school? And people wonder why our number one ranked military nation in the world is ranked something like seventeenth in education. School should not be an option in this country below high school. You live at home and attend school or you live in a detention center and attend school. It's your choice from where you start but one way or another you will go. I just can't see this being such a bad thing.
