As a child I can remember vividly my Dad's, When I was your age speeches. I can also remember my eyes rolling back into my head when he started one of these. The stories about walking three miles to school, through rain and snow, barefoot, etc., got to me every time. I think every dad should have a when I was your age story to share with their children. It seems to be the obligation of each previous generation to convince the current generation that they had it a little worse. As an adult and father of four, I am still searching for a great story that will tug at my kid's heartstrings and bring them back into line when they do wrong.
Unfortunately, I just don't have that much material to work with. We were far from rich but we had a roof over our heads, clothes to wear, and three usually homecooked meals a day. Electricity was only a problem during infrequent ice storms during the winter. Motorized transportation, phones, television, etc.. were all available. There was no HBO, Disney, or ESPN to rescue you. Yea, this should get to them. How about... When I was your age, the only McDonalds around was 30 miles away and had less than 1 million served. There was no such thing as a happy meal. The only time we could go by there was on rare trips to town when my dad wasn't along. Back then dad would have starved before he would have eaten there. And pizza? Forget it! The only pizza we saw came in a box and was called Chef Boy R Dee. Which would have been okay but my dad couldn't stand the smell in the house. Or maybe... When I was your age, there was no Nintendo, player's choice, Atari, etc.. video games. Children were punished by being forced to interact with each other playing board games, working puzzles, or outside sports. During extreme boredom, one could even be found reading a book. Oh the horror! There were no VCR's that you could pop in the latest selection from Blockbuster to waste away the time. I think I am beginning to scare them now. This is getting easier! I could say...
