A Gifted Child Humbles ME!

Are kids responsible for class work while in pull out programs? This was the topic of conversation of several teachers in the lounge.

I was really surprised by the responses. – “Well it’s really not fair that THEY get to leave and the other kids have to STAY!” - “Well, I TRY to do some fun things while thy are gone.” ( Now, I am going to sound off)

Are their classrooms so dead that they honestly feel this way? Are these little gifted ones reduced to being labeled a pronoun (they)? And what about the rest of the “regular” kids – I feel sorry for them too! Maybe a long look at the teachers' philosophy of education should be examined.

And trust me I almost came off of my chair, when a teacher said “well of course I have them do the work they missed – if THEY are gifted they can do extra!”

Well let’s punish the poor kid! You do twice as much as everyone else! That antiquated idea really upsets me! I don’t understand why some teachers react to gifted children so negatively! (Unless they are jealous) Why not turn it around.

Be challenged! Be excited! Feel privileged that you have the opportunity to touch that young life.

As I have said about parents, you don’t have to be gifted to parent a gifted child. It holds true for teachers. You don’t have to be gifted to teach the gifted! I am not gifted but I do have the desire to go the extra mile for a gifted student or any student for that matter! And I’m selfish enough that I want to be a part of the academic development of our gifted little ones! I get excited when I see children excel! Their quickness, their creativity, and their drive for personal greatness humbles me.
