Homemade Baby Food

There are great recipes that are quick and easy to prepare for your baby. My second son is still primarily receiving his nutrients from breast milk. As the days go by and he is getting bigger with each passing day, I have introduced a few foods from the garden for him to enjoy.

There are many rules for feeding a baby, I only have two main rules. I try to use the finest and freshest ingredients in preparing his foods and I make only enough food for a day or two. After reading many books on health for myself and my family, I have come to a big conclusion. You are what you eat. I want my sons to have great tasting and nutritious foods and the best way to offer it, is by preparing much of their meals from scratch.

Kitchen Hints

  • Fruit Preparation: Steam you fruit to retain their colour and to minimize nutrient loss. Peel the fruit and steam until soft. Puree in a blender, hand held blender or push through a sieve. The finest of the fruit depends on the age group of your child. Steaming apples keeps them from going brown. Preparation of fruits is about 10 minutes from start to finish.

  • Vegetable Preparation: Steam your vegetables until the are soft. Puree the same as above. Refrain from puree potatoes as they become too starchy. Push potatoes through a sieve. Introduce one vegetable at a time and then begin to place two vegetables in the steamer at once.

  • Drinks: Keep juices limited and water, breast milk and formula plentiful. If you are using juice, dilute it 5:1.

My small vegetable garden has been great for preparing my sons' meals. I leisurely stroll through the garden and handpick a carrot and a couple of peas one morning for his lunch or dinner meal. The next day I may chose parsnips or beans. Your child is receiving great food because it is at its freshest and is free of mass handling, chemicals and it is made of your love and hard work.
