Gadgets For the Garden

Over the past six weeks, gardening has become a passion for me. Each morning, I am busy watering or weeding the gardening, approximately 15 minutes a day. I am proud of my accomplishment in only 6 weeks. All of my seeds are sprouting and I am already enjoying my leaf lettuce in my salads. By the middle of July, I will only need to walk out my back door to enjoy our bountiful harvest.

My goal over the next few years is to plant only edible plants in my garden. This week I have a few gadgets for you to make to place in the garden to make your gardening even more enjoyable.

Gardening Gadgets
    Water Gauge

  • Take a glass container and mark 1/2 inch intervals up the sides of the glass. You may decorate the bottle with waterproof paint or leave as is in the garden. If your garden receives 1 inch or more rainfall a week, then do not water your garden.

    Labels For The Garden

  • Grab a handful of skewers some strong paper and coloured pencils. Draw fancy pictures and the name of the plant on a piece of paper. Laminate the pieces of paper to keep the rain from destroying the paper. Glue the card to the back of a wood skewer and tape the back for extra measure. Place these all over your garden. You may wish to cut the skewers to various lengths depending on the plant. This is great to identify plants for us first time gardeners and they also liven up the garden.

    Discouraging Small Animals

  • Cut up an old hose and place inside the gardener to discourage cats and raccoons. No small animal is fond of the neighbourhood snakes. You may also wish to buy cheap snakes and place them in the garden but if you have a phobia of snakes I would strongly suggest the garden hose instead. Another way to discourage little animals is to have a light motion detecter in the garden. The movement of the creature turns on the light and the animal should scurry away. There is also a new product for the garden that sings when their is disturbance in the garden. It is also a motion detecter and is quite inexpensive at the department stores.

All of these gadgets should make your gardening a little easier. Get the whole family involved in the gardening process.
