SIMPLE VEGETABLE GARDEN

We spend hundreds of dollars each month feeding our families. Let's cut the expense by growing your own vegetables and herbs. No matter the size of your garden there is enough room to grow a few vegetables and herbs. Even the city dwellers who live in apartments may use containers.

Each week I will give you garden hints to have a successful garden and to have delicious vegetables.

Step One for any successful garden is to invest in a compost. You can create your own, buy one from the local garden store or see if the city gives them out free of charge. Layering the material in the composter is the secret to creating good quality earth. To begin place 10 cm of soil at the bottom of the composter. Place another 10 cm of vegetables and grass clippings on top of the soil (green layer). Follow the green layer with dried leaves, dried grass, any material that is brown and dead (brown layer). Continue to layer the material and before long you will have rich soil. The soil is ready when it smells like earth and is dark in colour. Be sure not to add any meat, or dairy products to the compost. Stay with vegetables and grass.

Step Two is to purchase a rainbucket with a spout or place a large bucket with a lid outside. Place the bucket under the eavestrough to catch rainwater. Never water the garden with cold water it should be lukewarm. Saving rainwater also saves you money on your water bill. The indoor plants would also prefer rainwater to tap water.

Step Three is to decide where the garden shall be planted. We have limited space, but have decided on a garden that is 8 feet wide by 4 feet in length. As well, we are growing most of our herbs in containers. Placement of the garden is very important. Most vegetables require 6-8 hours of sunshine a day.

Step Four is to begin digging up the garden. Roughly outline the shape of your garden and start digging. We live in a new subdivision and most of the earth is clay. We need to dig approximately 3/4-1 foot down and get rid of the clay. We will replace the clay with organic soil. Ask at the garden store what type of material is good for your garden in your area. This will take a fair amount of time, so begin digging a little each day.
