High Energy Bills Got You Down

The Christmas Season has ended for another year. The new year brings promise and lots of mail from creditors. I have been overwhelmed with the increase in energy bills in our home in the last couple of months with the increase in energy costs. My family is saving a few more dollars each month with creative and inventive ways to keep the home warm and snug without having the thermostat doing double time. Enjoy these tips and lower your monthly energy bills.

  • Invest in a thermostat timer. They cost from $30.0 to over $100.0 per unit. The thermostat timer will save you money by decreasing the amount of energy used in the home. Program the timer to turn the thermostat down after everyone is snug in their beds. Throw an extra blanket on the beds to keep everyone warm during the night. Have the timer increase the temperature 1 hour before the first person wakes each morning.

  • Turn off the thermostat or turn it down if you are out of the home longer than 2 hours. Have the thermostat turn on, 1 hour before you return to make the home warm and comfortable. Be careful of freezing pipes by turning the thermostat off.

  • Open the drapes and blinds each morning to have the sun warm the home. We have many windows in our home and there are many days, I turn the thermostat off and allow the sun to keep our home warm. Be sure to close the drapes and blinds before the sun goes down to keep the warmth trapped in the home.

  • Invest in a pair of slippers for everyone in the home. One of the big complaints in our home was cold feet. For the Christmas Holiday, everyone received a pair of slippers.

  • Layer your clothes. Wear a t-shirt with a pullowver.

  • Keep doors and vents closed. If you are not in a room often, close the vent to decrease the amount of energy needed to keep your home warm. Same idea with the doors.

  • Wear your fuzzy bathrobe over your clothes if the home is too cold. After a couple of hours your body will change to the new temperature and you will no longer need the bathrobe.

  • Check all windows and doors for cracks. Fix all windows and doors that do not have a secure and tight seal. You will lose many dollars through these weak seals.
