Activities For the Kids When Mom is Ill

Being ill for the past month has taken a toll on our two year old son. Justin and I were never indoors even on those cold snowy days. I love being outdoors and exploring nature. My family recently moved and after a week in our home I became very ill and was unable to leave the house except to venture to the backyard for a few breaths of fresh air. My son dealt with my illness with such maturity. He would play quiet and ask little of his mommy during this time. I felt much guuilt over the lack of activities and started to make games that allowed mommy to stay in bed and Justin have a great time.

Great Activities
  • Have a handful of colouring books and crayons near the bed. You may colour with your child or watch as he colours close to mom.
  • Get out the legos and have your child build a city on the bed.
  • Have a puppet show in bed.
  • Read a book to your child or have your child read a book to you.
  • Play with your child's toy, be a dinosaur of years ago or a race car driver.
  • Invite a friend or relative over to take your child to the park. Say yes to help.
  • Watch a video in the middle of the afternoon.
  • Play with playdough on the bed. Place a piece of paper or plastic on the bed where you and your child will be playing with the dough.
  • Have naps. My son increased his nap time when mom was ill.
  • Let your child stay up late with dad to delay his morning wake.
  • Allow your child to entertain themselves for hours and do not feel bad that you are not involved. Before long you will be back to your old self.
  • Turn on the music and have your child dance.
  • Sing songs and recite children's poetry.

Being ill is no fun for anyone in the family. Get plenty of rest and tomorrow is another day to fully participate in your child's life.
