Eating Well When You Are Not Feeling Well

For the past month I have not been well. During this time I went back to all my old ways of eating out of convenience. I ordered a great deal of takeout for the familly and had my husband buy quick foods. During my illness, I did not have the energy or strength to cook or think of alternatives to all the bad convenience foods on the shelf. I am slowly feeling better and have thought of wonderful ways to say goodbye to take out and over processed foods by having your home stocked with good food items before you become ill or have a menu with ingredients listed for a family member to purchase.

  • Buy an array of fruits for the family. Be sure the fruits are washed before the last family member has left for the day and placed in a bowl on the coffee table. You may not be able to go as far as the kitchen but a reach to the table is usually okay. You are better eating an orange than having a glass of orange juice. Juice is a quick fix but a fruit in its raw form gives your body more energy in the long run. Try and eat an assortment of fruits, each fruit has different nutrients to aid in your health.

  • Have an assortment of vegetables cleaned and cut and ready for eating. This may stay in hand's reach or be in the fridge and you must muster the strength to grab the plate. Slowly chew the vegetables and try and have a few each day even when your body has no desire to place such an item in its mouth. Vegetables are packed with nutrients. Another alternative is to have a family member to make a vegetable soup puree. Make your favourite vegetable soup and puree for easy digesting for the person who is ill. Have a family member leave the soup in a thermos on the coffee table for easy access and it reduces the step of you heating it up. You may also freeze vegetable soup puree and take it out when you are feeling ill. Saves steps for everyone.

  • Your body is craving every sweet known and your willpower is dwindling. I let into my desire too often and about 1 hour later I felt worse. When I am well, there is very limited sweets in the house but when I am ill my husband will purchase every sweet I request to make me feel better. Best advice is to not purchase the sweets, if they are not in the home you will not be able to eat them. Try and have a fruit or crackers with jam instead of candy bars.
