Keeping Cool on Those Hot Days

The hot weather has hit hard in Toronto. Humidity is high and homes are stuffy and muggy without the aid of fans and central air conditioning. My family has to be creative with ways to keep themselves cool in the home.

Tips to Keep You Cool in Your Home

  • Keep the drapes and blinds closed during the day. Open the drapes when the sun is setting.

  • Open windows in the evening for a couple of hours to let the cool night air circulate the home. Keep those fans turning to keep the air circulating. Close most of your windows during the day.

  • Keep the oven off during the day if possible.

  • Buy shades that block the sun completely. To jazz them up, stencil them with fabric paint.

  • Wear cool and light clothes. Put the heavier clothes away, that includes denim.

  • Drink lots of fluids especially water. Stay away from sodas.

  • Place a cool cloth on the back of your neck to keep your body cool.

  • Hang your laundry outside to dry and keep the dryer turned off.

  • Do errands when the sun is not at its peak.

  • Make your own fan and fan yourself.

  • Slow down and take your time. Exert little energy during the hottest times of the day.

  • Take a cool bath.

  • Place your feet in a cool waterbath.

Hope these tips keep you cool on those hot and sticky days.
