National TV Free Week

Rekindle the art of listening and communicating by participating in National TV Free Week. Our family's reason for participating in this unique experience is to fill our lives with homemade entertainment.

Some great things will happen if you participate. Here is a short list of things that have happened in our home. I have not participated in the National TV Free Week in the past but have participated solely with my family for various periods of time.

Great Activities That Evolved
  • Longer dinners with my family chatting about life and not rushing through the meal because our favourite shows are on in 15 minutes.
  • We participate in creative entertainment. Making a homemade radio, starring in a one-man show viewed only by family members.
  • Playing games with the family. TV is a solitude act, playing games are interactive. My husband has taught me the basics of chess.
  • Community living-get to know the neighbours by having nightly entertainment with each other. Walks, book clubs, nature clubs... the list is endless when the creative juices are not being blocked out by the television.
  • Storytelling about my family's history to my children. Gives the children a little part of our past.
  • Free time to learn an instrument. The sweet sound of music inspired by my family. I am learning to play the harmonica and recorder.
  • Less influence from the advertising world. No commercial breaks in our family entertainment.
  • Less money spent on gadgets promoted around the clock on the television.
  • Reading great books.
  • More time to write in my journals.
  • The sound of peace and tranquility.

TV free week is to have people aware that many of us are addicted to the television. Flicking on the television is as automatic as flicking on a light switch. TV free week is a great time to reacquaint yourself with your family, community and most importantly yourself. It allows you to retrain your mind to find pleasure in a chess game without the television on in the background.

Don't let me tell you all about the benefits participate and see how many benefits you and your family share.
