Take Back the Day

We make hundreds of choices each day. Most of the choices are subconscious. This article will give you a great exercise to identify your choices and to make more conscious choices. The more conscious choices you make the freer you are and the more fulfilled and happy you will be.

Take Back the Day Exercise
  • Write down all the actions that take place in a 24 hour period. Do this for all 7 days. If one day is out of the ordinary, write down the typical actions of the day or do the day the following week.
  • Number each action, and have each action on its own line. You want every action to stand out on its own. This exercise is time consuming but you only need to do it for one week.
  • Write your action list as they occur if possible, you will miss out no detail to your day.
  • Be specific, write how you yelled at the kids for painting the walls with crayon or how you said hi to the next door neighbour.
  • When the list is complete, leave it for a couple of days and continue with your life.
  • Take out the action list and grab a red pen and black pen.
  • Read your first action. Identify it as a robotic action or a choice action. In black pen write robotic by the robotic action and in red pen write choice for the choice action. Example: I rose from bed-- Is this a robotic action or a choice action.
Did your rise from bed because the alarm went off and you do that each morning or Did you rise from bed because before you fell asleep you told your mind and body that you will be rising at 7:00 am. The robotic action is getting out of bed because the alarm went off and you must start the day. The choice action is you choice to get out of bed at 7:00 am to get a good start on your day and you chose to fell refreshed and happy to be starting such an incredibly new day.
  • Amazed at how the robotic actions rule your life. Let's get more red pen marks on your action list.
  • For each action ask yourself why you are doing it and for who. (example: I take the car through 1 hour of rush hour traffic each way, 5 days a week to get to my job because I have been doing it for the last 10 years)
