Halloween Is Baaaack!!!

© Debbie DeSpirt

Canadian Thanksgiving is gone for another year, now it is time to get ready for the scariest, spookiest holiday of the year. Halloween is great fun there is much preparation for this holiday before the big night. Our family begins the holiday by going to a pumpkin patch and hands pick a couple of great pumpkins that will transform to jack-o-lanterns. Then it is off to the neighbourhood fabric store to buy various materials for our costumes. After that, it is time to haul out last year's decorations and to decide on a few new decorations. This is a great holiday to get everyone involved and to have some great time with the kids. The big reward for the kids spending so much time with mom and dad are all the treats they will receive on the spookiest night of the year.

Before I continue, I have some helpful safety hints I would like to express.

  1. Never allow a child to go out by themselves. Have the buddy system. Even better, have parents travel with them and be on the sidelines watching out for the children.
  2. Have the children carry a light or have something on them that is reflective to allow motorists to better spot the children.
  3. If you are a motorist drive very cautiously, little children get very excited and quickly forget the rules of the road.
  4. Do not allow the children to eat the treats until you are able to inspect them at home. Bring some treats from your home for the walk.
  5. Trick and treat at neighbours you know and trust. If you are unsure skip the house, children still manage to get many treats without going to everybody's door.
  6. If you are not comfortable in your neighbourhood, opt for a Halloween party.
  7. Be alert and cautious on this great holiday. Costumes hide the identity of our loved ones and the identity of individuals who enjoy ruining the fun.
  8. Halloween is a great time, chances of a misfortune is rare but better safe than sorry.
Now that I have finished with safety let us, get to the good time of decorating our homes and us. Our family transforms our front lawn into a spooky graveyard with spider webs dangling from the trees. The children usually dress themselves up according to the latest fashion. Pokemon, Star Wars and Blues Clues will be the five star costumes at our home. I have found some great websites that will give you great ideas for recipes, costumes, decorations and games. I am especially fond of the Halloween carols sung to traditional Christmas Songs. This year I shall incorporate Halloween carols into our daily tradition. Happy Halloween.
