Breath is an incredible gift given to each of us at birth. Through life, we are taught many things but proper breathing is a forgotten art. This article is to introduce various breathing techniques and how to implement them into your daily life. I have started the process of proper breathing with my son and myself. Listed are a few breathing suggestions to lead to a healthier and better lifestyle.
Basic Breath
When you inhale your stomach should be out, breathing in all the good air. When you exhale your stomach should be flat, breathing out all the poor air. Think of the breath as a balloon, when you are putting air in, the balloon should be inflating and when the balloon is releasing air, the balloon should be deflating. It took me a while to do the basic breath. It was very confusing for my mind and body. Continue to concentrate on how you breathe and to make the necessary changes. Stress Releaser/Relaxing Breath
Sit in a comfortable position with your spine straight. You may be sitting or lying down. Close your eyes and observe your breath. When thoughts and ideas come into your mind concentrate on your breath. Continue to concentrate on your inhale and exhale for about 5-10 minutes. This will calm the entire body down and give you time to put away all the running thoughts of the days. This is done throughout the day to relax the body and release the stress within.
Peaceful Breathing
Peaceful breathing is breathing through your nostrils. It is very relaxing. Place your two middle fingers between your eyebrows, your thumb on your right nostril and your ring finger on the left nostril. Breathe in with the thumb on your right nostril and the ring finger away from the left nostril, and exhale with your ring finger on the left nostril and your thumb away from the right nostril. After just a few breaths, the whole body has a peace overcome it. I do this exercise when I am getting angry or feel I am cranky and out of sorts. Some days I have to continue to do this exercise when the anger has a hard time leaving my body.
Energy Breath
Close your mouth, inhale, and exhale through your nose only. Do as many as you can in one minute. You must be persistent with this breath to reenergize yourself. After time, this will replace the cup of coffee for the burst of energy.
