Springtime Crafts

The smell of spring is in the air. Springtime is a great time to explore the wonders of the outdoors. Crafts are a great way to entice the family to spend an afternoon together. Crafts should be simple and inexpensive using materials found in your home, in the environment or at yourlocal craft store. Below are some of my favorite spring time crafts. Enjoy!!

Rock art is great fun for kids of all ages. The crafter explores the hundreds of rocks available and chooses the most desirable rock to decorate.

Rock Art

  1. Gather various shapes and sizes of rocks found at parks or along beaches or in your own background. All sizes and shapes are perfect for rock art.

  2. Once at home, clean the rocks and air dry.

  3. Gather various art supplies. (markers, paints, crayons, glue, fabric...)

  4. Put your creative hat on and decorate.

  5. Rock art are great gifts for people. They can be used as paper weights, decorations for indoor gardens or masterpieces to be shown throughout the home.

Kite flying and parachuting is great fun. Kites can range in skill and price. My son and I make simple and inexpensive kites and parachutes that entertain us for hours. Our favorite wind catchers are parachutes.

Parachute Things

  1. Cut a piece of tissue paper or garbage bag into a square, about 40 cm. Decorate the paper or bag with paint and markers. Draw your favourite animal or print your name.

  2. Tape the four corners with masking tape. Hole punch each corner.

  3. Cut four pieces of dental floss or thread of equal amounts, about 45-50 cm. Attach to the four corners and allow the string to hang down.

  4. Tie the loose threads together at the bottom leaving approximately 10 cm to tie your object.

  5. Tie a light toy to the parachute. I use farm animals and toy soldiers that is available in bulk at discount stores. The heavier the object the faster it drops to the ground. Experiment with the size of your parachute and the object.

  6. Throw the parachute in the air and watch a picturesque landing.
These are great gifts for birthday grab bags.

Building projects with the environment is a great challenge. Working with nature creates unique pieces each time. No two rocks or twigs will ever be the same. If you want perfection, this is not the best crafting experience since you must work with what nature has given you. Collecting leaves, twigs, nuts and flowers gives you countless options in your craft. You can make containers, picture frames, wreaths,furniture...and the list is endless. My first twig creation was a paintbrush holder.
