While you are working your way out of debt and saving toward your ultimate homesteading goal, find a way to homestead where you are now, or move so that you can get started on a small scale. As a former reluctant city dweller, I would advise that if your present job ties you to a large city, you are unable at present to change jobs and move to a smaller city, and there are no affordable farmsteads or houses with yards that are available for rent within a commuting distance, then you should try to garden in a community garden project. If your community does not have a community garden, work to organize one. Garden in containers on an apartment balcony or in the alley. Bake bread, can or freeze produce when in season, learn to do your own repairs, and pursue other homesteading activities that can sharpen your skills and aid you in further saving money toward your dreams. Starting now on some level is important: most people fear the unknown, and you should begin to familiarize yourself with your desired lifestyle now to build confidence for later, larger steps.

If possible, you should look at moving to a small town or directly to the country. Even an acre of land with a cheap, used mobile home can house a family and be made to produce a large amount of a family's needs.

These are just a few thoughts to help you get started down a road to frugal financial health and attaining your homesteading dreams. I would suggest going to your public library and looking for books on personal finance such as Your Money or Your Life mentioned above, or any of the Tightwad Gazette books on frugal, cost-cutting ideas.
