The Siamese cat has gone through many changes over the years since its beginnings in 14th-century Siam.
The Traditional Cat Association, formed to protect the Applehead, recognizes 3 types of Siamese: Appleheads and Modern, Wedgeheads, and those not selectively bred.
Applehead Siamese Cats
An Applehead Siamese has an entirely round head, a medium-length muzzle, and a short nose. Cat Fancy calls this type of head a modified wedge. The expression Applehead began as derogatory, but many breeders now appreciate this type of Siamese cat.
Appleheads are not pure Siamese because the first breeders of the Applehead mixed traits of other breeds to achieve a bigger-looking frame.
Wedgehead Siamese
The Wedgehead Siamese have elongated muzzles and triangular faces which have been selectively bred over time. The look became popular during the 1950s and is still popular with enthusiasts today.
The Modern Siamese Breed
A Modern Siamese has a triangular head and large ears. Both the Modern Siamese and the Applehead have room between the eyes and the top of the head, but the body types are different. The Modern cat has a narrow frame, tubular body, and fine bone structure.
The Modern Siamese obtained championship status in 1977, and became the Cat Fanciers Association's most popular breed. Coat colors include white, cream, ebony, blue, chestnut, lavender, cinnamon, and fawn.
Siamese cats are in general very people-oriented animals. They are loyal and friendly, whatever the breed.
