Bleak and Wet Shropshire

Traditionally January is a month of hibernation for me and for Shropshire. There are few attractions open and even fewer events as the county settles in for the worst of the winter weather. Having just returned from Portugal a few days ago I must admit that I am finding the Shropshire climate of constant rain hard to handle. As a result of the rain flooding is once again a serious problem in the county. I can only hope that the floods of last year can be avoided.

Arthur Rowley Football Legend Dies

Last month I dedicated my column to one of the greatest English footballers of all time, Billy Wright, who was born in Ironbridge. This month I want to mention another local football legend, Arthur Rowley, who sadly died last month at the age of 76. At Shrewsbury Town his 38 goals in season 1958 - 59 is still a record and his career tally of 434 league goals will never be matched. Below you can read a tribute from the BBC that includes an audio tribute from current Telford United manager Jake King.

South Shropshire District Council

http://www.southshropshire.org.uk/pages/...

This simple and attractive site provides a wealth of information for local people ranging from the services provided by the Council to links to local accommodation. If you are thinking of visiting Ludlow or any part of South Shropshire I would recommend a visit to this site.

BBC Shropshire

http://www.bbc.co.uk/shropshire/

This is a site I have mentioned a few times over the last year and in my opinion it is now the finest site on the net for information and current news about the county. It covers many topics including Shropshire's Past in Pictures and Secret Shropshire as well as the option to hear the local radio news and even watch the local evening TV news programme and is my number 1 Shropshire site.

Shropshire Star

Another favorite site has been given a facelift and now includes brief descriptions of most of the towns in the county as well as details of walks and even printable maps. There is also a very good section that provides reviews of pubs and restaurants in the county. There is even a review of local butchers and fishmongers.

Finally I would like to wish everyone a happy and rewarding New Year. Although it might be difficult to look forward to 2003 with any great optimism as we seem set on another armed conflict in the Gulf I hope that even now that conflict can be avoided.
