With winter starting to close in on the county much of the attractions are beginning to close. The one notable exception is the Ironbridge Gorge Museum which will be having a major firework display on the 2nd November. In the run up to Christmas the Museum will be entering the Christmas spirit with a Victorian Christmas. Check out the site for details of their forthcoming events

Battle of Shrewsbury A few weeks ago I watched a programme on BBC called "Two Men in a Trench" which features two historian / archeologists who try and find artifacts on battlefields and through them try and form a view of the people and events of the battle. The programme I watched featured the Battle of Shrewsbury which took place in 1403. This battle was one of the most important of the period and featured the first longbow exchange in Britain and was also interesting as it was fought between two former allies. Henry Bolingbroke, now Henry IV, had taken the crown from Richard II with the support of the Percy family and at Shrewsbury it was Henry Percy, known as Harry Hotspur he faced. Harry Hotspur http://www.geocities.com/percyfamilyhist... This page gives in-depth information about Henry Percy. Battle of Shrewsbury http://www.skcldv.demon.co.uk/shrewsb.htm This site gives good background information on the battle and of the Percy Family. There are also details of the proposed celebrations to mark the 600 anniversary of the Battle. Two Men in a Trench http://www.bbc.co.uk/history/archaeology... This is part of the BBC site and gives some details of the battlefields that the programme covered. Albright Hussey Hotel http://www.users.globalnet.co.uk/~dartud... If you want to visit the battlefield why not stay at the Albright Hussey Hotel which was featured in the "Two Men in a Trench" programme and is only a short distance from the Battlefield and the Church that stands close to the battlefield site. Shakespeare's Henry IV http://the-tech.mit.edu/Shakespeare/1hen... The Battle of Shrewsbury is featured in Shakespeare's play Henry IV and the link above will take you to the play. Wilfred Owen A new autobiography of Wilfred Owen has just been published here in Britain. Although I have not had a chance to read it the reviews suggest that it will become the definitive work on the War Poet. Owen has always fascinated many because of his poetry but also because of the apparent contradiction between the Poet and the decorated war hero. If you want to know more about Owen try reading my article at http://www.suite101.com/article.cfm/shro... I have included the book in my list of books although it will not be available until early next year. Go To Page: 1 2
