Although summer is clearly over you would not know it in Shropshire. With almost no rain in September and daytime temperatures into the 70's it is a wonderful time to visit this beautiful county. As usual there are any number of events taking place this month but I want to concentrate on a project close to my heart as well as a mention for my hometown's main event of the year.
Shropshire Mining A couple of months ago I mentioned that I was working on a piece about the mining industry in Shropshire over the last couple of centuries. As with most things in my life this is taking me much longer than I anticipated and I will be working on this for some time to come. I thought that you might be interested in a couple of sites that give some indication of the scale of mining in the county. Mining Site in Broseley http://www.broseley.org.uk/Journal/minin... This site is a little short on information but has a number of interesting photographs of the mining site as it is currently. Snailbeach Colliery http://www.ap.pwp.blueyonder.co.uk/sbeac... This is a comprehensive site with a great deal of information covering the history of the mine and much more. This lead mine is thought to be one of the mines used by the Romans and in it's heyday was the largest lead mine in Europe. British Mining Database http://www.ap.pwp.blueyonder.co.uk/bmd.h... For those who might want to start finding out about mining on a broader scale this site is the best way I have found to access any number of sites covering mining all over the country. Meadow Colliery Site http://www.shropshiremining.org.uk/main.... An old favorite of mine and still one of the finest mining sites on the web. This site sparked my interest in the history of mining in the county and is a good place to start any search for information. Wellington Literary Festival Once again the Wellington Literary Festival is being staged this month. Tonight the main attraction is the Poet Laureate Andrew Motion. For those not familiar with Motion I have included a couple of links to sites that will provide information on him. His most notable works are an autobiography of Keats and of Philip Larkin and has recently published a book on Thomas Wainwright titled "Wainwright the Poisoner". Brief Biography of Andrew Motion http://www.durhamcityarts.demon.co.uk/fe... Transcript of a lecture by Motion on Keats http://www.abc.net.au/rn/arts/bwriting/s... Wellington Literary Festival http://www.wellingtontc.rapidial.co.uk/ This site gives all the details of the month long festival. Click under "News" for the full details. Well that is it for another month. As always, if you think I can be of help with anything related to Shropshire then either email me direct or drop me a note in the forum and I'll see what I can do. Until next month take care and enjoy your surroundings wherever you are in the world. Go To Page: 1 2
