Sporting Summer in Shropshire

After the great celebrations throughout the country for the Queen's Jubilee, some might think that the rest of the summer might be a bit quiet. On the contrary, the county is buzzing with activity and I can only touch on some of the more interesting events in this article.

Much Wenlock Olympics

In a summer dominated by sport, the Much Wenlock Olympic Games is Shropshire's oldest and most respected sporting event. I covered the remarkable story of these games in my previous article at

http://www.suite101.com/article.cfm/shro...

This year the games are taking place between 12 - 14 July and are not to be missed if you can possibly attend.

Ludlow Festival

Last week my wife, Audrey, and I went through to Ludlow for the day. I am ashamed to admit it but it had been some time since we last visited this delightful town but it will not be long before we return. The shops are great and the little market close to the castle had wonderful fresh produce from the surrounding area.

Apart from being one of the finest market towns in England Ludlow is never afraid to stage events providing well deserved publicity for the town. While we were there the Literary Weekend was ending and the Ludlow Festival was about to start. This festival brings opera, popular music and theatre to the town and surrounding area as well as guest appearances by some very well known people. Unfortunately there is not that much information about the Festival on the web but if you are interested in attending the festival the booking office telephone number is 01584 872150. The Festival runs until the 7th July.

Shropshire Mining

Over the last couple of months I have become more and more interested in the history of mining in Shropshire. It is a new area to me and I am still feeling my way but I hope to do an in depth piece latter in the year. However there are a couple of very good sites on the web which might interest you. I have mentioned the Meadow Colliery site previously. It gives a lot of information and the whole site is clearly a labour of love. I especially like the "A Pit Man's Story" section.

Another site is that of the Shropshire Mines Trust, which gives details of their work in preserving the mines of Shropshire and that, can be found at

You will probably have noticed some changes to the look of the Suite 101 sites and I have postponed my update of my content until these changes bed in. Those of you very observant will also have noted a new feature that will allow us editors to recommend books relevant to our subjects. I am currently looking at books dealing with Shropshire and I will be making some recommendations next month. So until then keep well and, as usual if I can be of help regarding Shropshire drop me a line.
