Shropshire Springs Into Action

© John Neill

Spring is my favourite time of the year here in Shropshire. After the bad weather there is always the optimistic feeling of things improving on all fronts from weather to personal outlook.

This time of year also sees Shropshire awaken from winter slumber and start to face the impending arrival of the many visitors that will come to this beautiful part of England. Most of the tourist attractions will be open by the time you read this and whilst I love all the seasons in this county early Spring, before the tourists really flock in, is a great time to get out and about.

Hoo Farm

This farm has a wide range of attractions and is easy to reach. I have to confess that although it is close to where I live I have never visited but I am really tempted to make the effort especially to watch the Sheep Steeplechase on Easter Monday. The site has all the details you need and is very colourful and will appeal to kids.

Ludlow Racecourse

Those who read these pages regularly know that I enjoy having a drink. One of my other pleasures is the occasional wager on the horses and Ludlow Racecourse is one of the prettiest courses in England. Even if you do not gamble a trip to the course is well worth the effort and the site gives details of meetings and some historical details.

Acton Scott Working Farm

If you are interested in catching a glimpse of a bygone era then why not visit this working farm museum. Horse drawn agricultural equipment and a chance to see the traditional skills that have all but disappeared make this a great day out for all the family. The site gives brief details and the main museum site links to other attractions.

Accommodation

Whenever I have mentioned places to stay in Shropshire I have looked at the top end of the market. This site is for the Youth Hostel Association's accommodation close to the World Heritage site at Ironbridge. The buildings are impressive and the cost is very reasonable and you don't need to be in your teens to take advantage of the offers.

Personal

By the time you read this I will be on vacation in Goa in India. It has long been one of my wife's ambitions to visit Goa and we are both looking forward to the trip with great enthusiasm.

That's it for another month. I am hoping to make a start on revamping the site when I return so there might be some changes by the next article so keep checking. As usual if you have any questions or comments then drop me a line at the site and I'll get back to you as soon as possible. If there are any things you want me to cover or an area of Shropshire you want me to concentrate on then let me know.
