Soggy Shropshire

One thing we British like to talk (and moan) about is the weather. This month in Shropshire has been very wet and there have been some near gale force winds that have caused some structural damage (my back fence has blown down twice in the last two weeks) in the county. Wet weather means that one of the county’s great attractions can, for some, become a menace. I mean of course the River Severn. For many homes and businesses located near the river wet weather brings the fear of flooding and I’m afraid that Shrewsbury has suffered widespread flooding twice this month.

The Shropshire Star

As usual the local newspaper is the best place for information and the Star’s web site has pictures of the floods

For those further interested the Shropshire Star now has a web cam focused on the English Bridge in Shrewsbury. The site is at:

Literary Shropshire

In the past I have mentioned some of Shropshire’s major literary figures such as:

Edith Pargeter

Wilfred Owen

Mary Webb

Recently I came across this interesting site. It gives brief details of the many literary figures that have even a slight connection with Shropshire. I must admit I was surprised at just how many famous literary figures passed through the county. The Shropshire part of the site cane be found at

If Shropshire is only one part of your interest in Britain then can I direct you to some other sites here on Suite 101 covering places and history. These sites are run by people like me who are interested in their topics and so you can be sure that they will provide the best links and information available.

Royal Britain

Tudor England

Leicester Past and Present

U K History

Modern British History

Once again that’s all for this month. There have been a number of changes here at Suite 101 over the last few weeks but I intend to continue with this site and once my next trip is over (my wife and I are of to Goa in India at the end of the month) I intend to completely overhaul the site. If you have any suggestions as to what you would like to see or any topic you would like me to tackle then as usual drop me a note in the discussion page here at the site.

Regards,

John Neill
