Romantic Shropshire

© John Neill

Welcome to another article from Shropshire. I hope that all of you had a wonderful Christmas and are looking forward to an exciting New Year. My wife and I spent Christmas and New Year in the south of Spain this year. It was the first time we had ever been away at that time and I must say that we both had a great time and walking on the beach on Boxing Day and sitting at a pavement café in warm sunshine on New Years Day are experiences that we will be repeating in the future.

Genealogy

When I was considering what to write about this month I came across details of a site that gave access to the 1901 census. I felt that this would be of interest to those of you who are interested in genealogy. Unfortunately the site at

http://www.censushelpdesk.co.uk/

has been overwhelmed by the number of visits and is at present not available. I do believe however that for those interested in genealogy this will be a valuable reference site so keep an eye on it.

Oakengates

A site that I have mentioned before is the Oakengates site. Each time I visit I am more impressed and for anyone interested in the history of the area then your first port of call must be:

http://www.oakengates.com/history/histor...

From the Romans until the Industrial Revolution there is plenty of information at this great site.

St. Valentine’s Day

I could not write this months article without a mention of St. Valentine’s Day. For those in Shropshire or anyone who might be visiting at this time of year why not try something a little different as a surprise gift. http://www.balloonsovershropshire.co.uk/

What could be more romantic than an early morning balloon flight over the beautiful Shropshire countryside? This site will give you all the details you need for that very special gift for that very special someone in your life.

How about taking that special someone on a romantic break to Shropshire. Below are two sites giving details of quality accommodation in beautiful surroundings.

No 28

http://www.no28.co.uk/

This is a rather unusual and very good bed & breakfast establishment that consists of a number of period houses in one of Ludlow’s finest streets.

Delbury Hall

http://www.delbury.com/

This is a quality hotel offering gorgeous bedrooms (one with a four poster bed) in a lovely romantic setting near Ludlow.

Shopping Shropshire

http://www.shoppingshropshire.com/

This is a new site that shows some promise. Although a number of the links are inactive I think it might prove to be a valuable addition to the many top quality Shropshire sites on the net. There are links to accommodation and attractions as well as a very good looking “What’s On” calendar.
