Christmas Gift Ideas From ShropshireMy wife Audrey has finished her Christmas shopping. In fact on a visit back to our home city of Glasgow last month she delivered Christmas presents for her sister and our friends there. If you are not as well organized (or should that be peculiar) then my column this month makes a few suggestions for some unusual gifts from Shropshire. Severn Valley Railway Christmas Events http://www.svr.co.uk/chris.html What could be more special than a trip on a steam train to do some Christmas shopping. The site has journey times and prices as well as full details of all the special trips planned over the coming month. These include trips where Father Christmas will be aboard the train presenting gifts to children. Ironbridge Gorge Museum Christmas Events http://www.ironbridge.org.uk/sh_ironbrid... For that unusual gift why not think about something from Ironbridge. The site has a number of gifts in cast iron, ceramics, tiles and souvenirs. http://www.ironbridge.org.uk/v_december.... This section has details of the events being staged during December. These include a Victorian Christmas at Blist Hill. Tanners Wine http://www.tanners-wines.co.uk/xmas1.htm What could be nicer than a glass of good wine during and after the Christmas meal. Well Tanners Wine is the place in Shropshire to buy your wine. The site gives some good ideas for wines (and cheese) for personal consumption and also as gifts to friends. Wroxeter Roman Vineyard http://www.wroxetervineyard.co.uk/wineli... If, like me, you enjoy nice wine then why not try locally produced wines from Wroxeter Vineyard. The site gives full descriptions of the wines as well as background on the founding of the vineyard and details of tours that can be arranged. The Name Shop http://www.family-name.co.uk/family.htm For a more unusual gift what about a history of your family name (or that of your friends) that has been researched and the details attractively presented. This site gives details of such a service and promises in depth research. There seems to be quite an interest in genealogy at present and it is the main subject of mail that I receive. With that in mind I thought I might take this opportunity to provide a couple of sites that might help anyone interested in tracing their ancestry. Shropshire Family History Society This site provides a search engine that should be a good starting point for anyone interested in tracing his or her family history. Genealogylinks http://www.genealogylinks.net/uk/england... This very comprehensive site has links not only for England but the rest of Britain as well as the USA and other parts of the world. The link above will take you to the Shropshire page with a number of links.
