Shrewsbury: Jewel of ShropshireAs we approach winter it may seem a strange time to concentrate on information for visitors however this is a great time to come to Shropshire and in particular Shrewsbury. I can think of few places to compare to Shrewsbury on a crisp clear winters day. As an example of the ideal English county town it has no equal in my opinion. With good road and rail links, fine examples of Tudor architecture and good local attractions Shrewsbury is an ideal destination for a short break. Below I have included accommodation, restaurants and local attractions, all with web sites enabling you to check for yourself what is on offer. For general information these first two sites will provide all that is needed to give you an overview of Shrewsbury’s attractions. SHREWSBURY MAGAZINE www.shrewsbury.ws This is the site of a free magazine distributed in Shrewsbury and the surrounding area. There are links to accommodation and restaurants. SHREWSBURY for VISITORS http://www.virtual-shropshire.co.uk/shre... This site provides information on local services as well as food and drink and visitor attractions. ACCOMMODATION As this article is based around the idea of providing information for the weekend or short stay visitor I have limited the accommodation to some of those hotels situated in the town. BELLSTONE HOTEL www.bellstone-hotel.co.uk/start.html Centrally located this hotel and bar/restaurant is very convenient for exploring the town. The site is well designed and gives plenty of information. LION AND PHEASANT www.lionandpheasant.co.uk Centrally located this is a great base from which to explore Shrewsbury. The site gives details of accommodation and a map. PRINCE RUPERT HOTEL www.prince-rupert-hotel.co.uk This fine site gives plenty of information about this hotel. The Prince Rupert is centrally located and offers top quality and more traditional levels of service and accommodation. RESTAURANTS Over the last few years the standard of food on offer in Shrewsbury has undergone a revolution and whilst it is still behind Ludlow there are a number of top class restaurants around the town. Below is a small selection of the new wave of restaurants serving superb food. TRAITORS GATE BISTRO www.traitorsgate.co.uk The site provides extensive menu information and a map. Well located and with a good wine list this is worth a visit. THE PEACHTREE www.thepeachtree.co.uk The site gives menu information as well as a number of pictures of the restaurant. Close to the Abbey this is another fine place for a meal or a drink. THE CORNHOUSE www.cornhouse.freeuk.com Another fine restaurant and the site gives details of not only the menu but of forthcoming events. SOL RESTAURANT www.solrestaurant.co.uk The site is visually impressive giving brief details of the menu. This is one of the best of the new wave of restaurants in the town.
