Good Food and a Good ReadSummer is almost over and we have had the last Bank Holiday before Christmas. Whilst the weather was great I can’t help but start to think about autumn and winter fast approaching and I haven’t even had my summer holiday yet. Wellington Literary Festival Another reason for me thinking ahead is that the programme for the Wellington Literary Festival has just been published. As a writer and a resident of Wellington this is the highlight of my year and the organizers have excelled themselves with brilliant and varied attractions. Held throughout October the highlight is the visit by Martin Bell, former MP and of course TV News correspondent. There are also a number of events featuring local authors and as usual the Wrekin Writers have organized a workshop. Check out the details at the site http://www.wellingtontc.rapidial.co.uk/L... Ludlow Marches Food & Drink Festival The premier food event in the county and fast becoming one of the most important in the country the Ludlow Food Festival takes place between the 7th and the 9th September. Events include a sausage trail, cookery demonstrations and competitions. Whilst there is a concentration on featuring local produce two features will be a Taste of Normandy and a Taste of Valpolicella. For those of you who read my articles regularly you will know that I enjoy a drink so obviously the Ale Trail will be high on my list of things to do at this fantastic event. The site has all the details of events and prices on this fine site. http://www.foodfestival.co.uk/ Captain Mathew Webb On the 1st September a new biography of the first man to swim the English Channel will be published. Written by Kathy Watson “The Crossing: The True Story of One Man Who Achieved the impossible – and What He Did Next” it tells the story of Webb and his triumphs and disasters. You can read about the book at: http://shop.barnesandnoble.com/booksearc... Mathew Webb was born in Dawley and his fame brought the county great attention and notoriety. A brief summary of his life as well as interesting pictures of Dawley can be found at: http://www.telfordlife.com/Capt%20Webb.h... and http://www.shropshiremining.org.uk/captw... (The picture of the Captain Webb in Wellington is my local pub) New Sites Added A couple of sites I have added to my Shropshire Today list at http://www.suite101.com/linkcategory.cfm... A Shropshire Lad http://www.ashropshirelad.com/ Although primarily a site for writers it also offers a good selection of links for those interested in some of Shropshire’s famous natives. Telford Life This site has plenty of information for the locals covering businesses and services and for the visitor covering local history, attractions and events. Well laid out and easy to navigate this is one site I’ll be checking often.
