Sweet Smelling Victorians

This month I take a look at the renewed interest in the Victorians, how Shrewsbury will smell even sweeter than usual, look forward to the football season and check out the pubs of Shropshire.

The Victorians

As this is the centenary of the death of Queen Victoria there has been an increase in interest in all things Victorian. The museums of the Ironbridge Gorge have always showcased the Victorians and the way they lived and how the Ironbridge area played its part. Now an online exhibition adds to that by displaying fine paintings showing the splendor of the Great Exhibition held in 1851 at Crystal Palace in London.

Blist Hill Victorian Town

This large open air museum allows the visitor to experience life in a Victorian village. On Saturdays there is a wedding celebration and on Sundays the recruiting sergeant comes to the village looking for soldiers for the Boer War. With a bank where you can exchange modern money for the old Victorian currency the whole atmosphere created is as authentic as it possibly can be.

Charles Darwin

One of the giants of the Victorian era was Charles Darwin who was born in Shrewsbury. The Natural History Museum in London will be opening The Darwin Centre early next year and this site has some initial information and will no doubt be fully updated as the centre nears completion. If you want to know more about Charles Darwin and his famous theories about evolution then why not start with one of my earlier articles on the great man.

This site covers all the museums in the valley with details of opening times and pricing. Each museum shows in its own way how the Ironbridge Gorge was the powerhouse of much of the Victorian era.

Shrewsbury Flower Show

August is all about flowers. At least it is if you are in Shrewsbury for the Shrewsbury Flower Show is held at this time each year in the town. Although the flowers are the stars there is much more to the two day show held on the 10th and 11th of August and the site gives details of tickets and other attractions. If you are in the area it is an event not to be missed.

Shropshire Football
