Fetes Fairs and Festivals

Summer came to Shropshire (and most of Britain) over the last couple of weeks with temperatures in the mid 20c which is pretty good for us. There are also other milestones which point to summer such as Royal Ascot and Wimbledon. As well as the change in weather there also seems to be a change in attitude with a more optimistic feel around. Partly this is as a result of the General Election being over but also the worst of the Foot and Mouth being well behind us. In Shropshire summer is for fetes, fairs, flower shows and festivals. Each town and village has an event designed to attract visitors and show off local produce or talent and below I bring just a few to your attention. For those who read this column regularly my mentioning attractions or events which have something to do with alcohol will be familiar. One of my favourite pastimes is frequenting pubs and enjoying good food, good drink and good company. Most areas of Shropshire can boast an excellent pub and a site I have mentioned before at

http://www.midlandspubs.co.uk/shropshire...

will give you details of some of the finest.

However this month I thought I would let you know that a pub in my town of Wellington has been voted "Local Branch Pub of the Year" by Camra ( Campaign for Real Ale). The pub is the Cock Hotel and for more details visit the CAMRA site at:

http://www.telfordpages.co.uk/camra/pubs...

The Spring 2001 "Pub of the Season" was the Wenlock Edge and you can find out why at :

http://www.telfordpages.co.uk/camra/loca...

In the same vein I must also mention the Bishops Castle Beer Festival which takes place on the 6th and 7th July. Details of this event are at:

That's it for this month and as always if there is anything you want to ask or discuss please drop me a line at the discussion page (there is a link at the top of the page) and I'll get in touch.
