Shropshire Business As UsualBritain is open for business ! That is the message from Tony Blair in the face of the foot and mouth crisis. This attempt to allay the fears of prospective tourists is vital as not only the farming communities are hit but it is increasingly clear that Britain's tourist industry looks set to suffer. It appears that there is widespread concern amongst those who would visit Britain that the whole country is in the grip of crisis and grinding to a halt. Nothing could be farther from the truth. With Spring finally here and Easter to look forward to the tourist attractions are gearing up for business as usual. The only thing that looks likely to be missing are the tourists. I live in Wellington, a small market town surrounded by beautiful Shropshire countryside and I can honestly say that the foot and mouth crisis has had no impact on my life whatsoever. The number of cases of foot and mouth has been relatively few in Shropshire but it is having an impact on those rural communities dependant on farming and in many cases the towns that both depend on and support the farming communities are suffering. This suffering is being exacerbated because it looks as if many tourists will stay away this Spring. I can only urge anyone thinking of visiting this wonderful county to please come.
