This month I want to give my home town a plug. Wellington is hosting the fourth annual Wellington Literary Festival starting on October 2nd until October 27th.
This year the festival is better than ever and has attracted some top quality names from the world of books. Below I feature some of the highlights of this month long festival. Monday October 2nd The Festival begins with an appearance by Colin Dexter creator of Inspector Morse, the popular Oxford detective known to many of us from the books but also from the extremely popular TV series. Mr. Dexter will be in Wellington on Monday evening appearing at New College and on Tuesday signing his books at the W H Smiths in the town. Friday October 6th The Bellfrey Theatre Fusion Group will perform a short play entitled "A Murder is Announced". Shropshire author Priscilla Masters will also be making an appearance. Tuesday October 17th The Wilfred Owen Society present "Poet and Soldier" featuring Shropshire writer Helen McPhail author of a number of books on the First World War. If you want to know a little more about Wilfred Owen I have included the link to my previous article about this brilliant Shropshire poet. http://www.suite101.com/article.cfm/shro... Thursday October 19th The Secretary of State for Education David Blunkett along with Martin Brookes and Gillian Linscott will be discussing the work of Edith Pargeter ( better known as Ellis Peters) author of the Cadfael series of books based in and around Shrewsbury Abbey. Gillian Linscott is an award winning author having recently won the Ellis Peters Historical Dagger prize for her novel Absent Friends which is set in Leominster close to where Gillian lives. Below is a link to a previous article by me on Ellis Peters and her Cadfael novels. http://www.suite101.com/article.cfm/shro... Friday October 27th Random Acts of Murder a play by Alan Fraser, winner of the festival's 1999 Derek Lomas Play Writing Award, will be performed by the Bellfrey Theatre. ********************** Mary Webb Books Since last months column about Mary Webb I have discovered that Virago Books has a timeline of classic women authors on their web site which features Mary Webb and where you can order not only Precious Bane but also Gone to Earth. http://www.virago.co.uk/virago/results.a... This month I have added a few new links to my list of Shropshire links.
