Shropshire News and Festivals

Something a little different this month. After Easter Shropshire tends to come alive, not just in terms of spring flowers, but the county starts to show off. Each town and village seems to be vying for attention so I thought I would give you a round up of what's been happening here over the last few weeks and what to look forward to in the coming months.

Ironbridge

After some eight months covered with scaffolding the upgrade to the famous bridge, built in 1779, has been completed. The opening ceremony was attended by William Henry Darby Dolding an eighth generation descendant of the builder of the bridge Abraham Darby.

Even after the 300,000 pounds facelift there are still serious concerns about the long term future of the bridge and its ability to cope with the ever increasing number of visitors each year.

Jackfield Bridge

A few miles downstream from Ironbridge the Jackfield and Coalport Memorial Bridge has also been upgraded. The 430,000 pounds spent ensures that the bridge will continue to be fully used and remain the only functioning war memorial.

Wellington News Web Site http://www.wellnews.co.uk/index.html

For some time I have enjoyed a little magazine which is delivered to my, and almost every other resident of Wellington's, mailbox. The free magazine has interesting articles on the history of Wellington as well as news and advertising. The reason I mention this is that the Wellington News now has a web site and from anywhere in the world you can download the magazine.

FESTIVALS
Much Wenlock Festival

The opening of this festival attracted star Honor Blackman who with fellow actors performed readings of prose and poetry at the local Holy Trinity Church. The festival, which runs until July 2nd, also includes an exhibition of paintings and photographs at the Guildhall. Among the many other attractions at the festival will be a conference hosted by the Mary Webb Society and to end the festival on July 2nd Glorious Gardens Of Wenlock will enable people to visit gardens around the town.

Details of other festivals to be held in and around Much Wenlock can be found at http://www.virtual-shropshire.co.uk/much... and at http://www.virtual-shropshire.co.uk/edge...

RAF Cosford http://www.rafmuseum.org.uk/flat/cosford/

A new interactive set of displays has been added to the museum covering the basics of flight. The displays have proved popular at the RAF museum in Hendon and it is hoped that they are as popular here in Shropshire.

Bridgenorth Solstice Festival

As part of the celebrations a market will be held on 25th June which will include traders from the Tunisian town of Sousse. This will add an exotic flavour to what will be a great market.
