Billy Wright – Captain FantasticIn the middle of all of this Billy met and later married Joy Beverly. Joy was a member of the hugely popular singing group the Beverley Sisters and along with her sisters she had a number of hit records. Their marriage was a media event and was the forerunner of the now familiar "celebrity wedding". In the 1957-58 season Wolves finally won the Championship and repeated the feat the following season. With his beloved Wolves the topside in England and a major name in Europe Billy decided to retire in 1959. He had a brief spell as manager of his boyhood heroes Arsenal before moving into television where he worked until retiring in 1989. Billy died in 1994 and in his memory a statue was erected outside Wolverhampton Wanderers stadium. His funeral brought the town of Wolverhampton to a standstill as thousands paid their respects to one of the greats of English football.
