With the weather improving all the time and most attractions now open this is a great time to visit the county. Spring in Shropshire is surely one of the most beautiful times of the year. This month I have a couple of Spring events held in the lovely Shropshire countryside as well as an old favorite and a new featured sport. I start this months features with a rather odd piece I found while trawling the net.
Hitler and Bridgnorth http://portal.telegraph.co.uk/global/mai... This appeared in the expat version of the Telegraph and shows that Shropshire has attractions for everyone. The recently unearthed papers appear to show that Hitler was considering the quiet Shropshire town as his headquarters after a successful invasion of Britain. He chose Bridgnorth because of its central position and close proximity to an airfield. The fact that there was a castle also seemed to have some significance. It is interesting to consider what might have been in the light of these papers. Clun Greenman Festival http://www.clun.org.uk/greenman/ A traditional celebration of Spring this annual event is always a great attraction. The figure of Greenman appears in a number of mythologies and this celebration is interesting and always worth a visit. Telford Life - Local History http://www.telfordlife.com/Local%20Histo... This is one of my featured sites and it continues to provide good local information. However these pages are a great insight into the local history of the county and all the entries seem to carry a particularly strong sense of reality. Severn Valley Railway http://www.svr.co.uk/specevents.php For the younger members of the family the Severn Valley Railway is staging a "Day out with Thomas" over a couple of weekends in May. The page has other special events which will take place later in the summer. Blist Hill - Victoria's Birthday Celebrations http://www.virtual-shropshire.co.uk/shro... At the end of the month Blist Hill museum will be celebrating the birthday of Queen Victoria. The Victorian town will be staging a number of events and there is bound to be something for everyone. Golf in Shropshire http://www.virtual-shropshire.co.uk/visi... A friend of mine is a keen golfer and pointed out that I never mention the great golf courses which the area has. This site list some of the courses and I am assured that you are always going to find a friendly welcome at any course within the county. Well that is all from me for this month. My wife and I enjoyed our trip to Cuba very much and we are now looking forward to returning to Malta soon to enjoy the spring weather by the Mediterranean Sea. For those thinking of visiting the county please remember that I am happy to provide information if I can so please drop me an e-mail or just let me know how your visit went. Go To Page: 1 2
