Festive Fun in Shropshire

The year seems to have flown by. My wife and I are still in Malta as I write this and I am not looking forward to returning to the freezing weather I understand the county has been encountering for the last few weeks.

December is a time for reflection on the year passing and some apprehension at what might be ahead in the new year. As for the county there are still any number of events and attractions which will be open throughout the festive period. Below I mention a small but varied selection of those events.

Severn Valley Railway

Why not take a train trip with Santa. The SVR is running a number of special trains some providing a gift for all children and some with Santa on board. Even for the more mature among us this sounds like a great day out. There is a PDF leaflet available to download on the site.

Weston Park

The above link takes you to the page covering the special Christmas dining experience running on selected dates during December. The price includes overnight accommodation as well as carol singers and sumptuous food. The page includes the menu available for these very special meals.

Ironbridge Gorge Museum

The Blists Hill Victorian Town Museum is having a special Christmas Festival Weekend on 11 - 12 December. My wife and I visited one of the museums last year just before Christmas and found it a great day out and the food was excellent.

Shrewsbury Music Hall Panto

I can't write a Festive column without mentioning at least one pantomime being performed in the county. The Music Hall in Shrewsbury features the ever popular Cinderella and the site has booking details as well as performance times and the facility to book on-line. This traditional entertainment is always popular with young and old alike and is for many an unmissable feature of Christmas.

Wem

Just a brief diversion from the Festive events to mention a town which I too often ignore and that is Wem. A while ago I told you about the Sweet Pea Festival and the part that Wem played in the history of the sweet pea. This site is new to me and provides a good blend of information on the history of the town and the sweet pea with details of events and attractions in the area. To get us back on the Festive theme the town is holding a Winter Festival on 2 December when the Christmas lights will be switched on. If you are in the area I have a feeling that this might be one of those great old fashioned events which we all want to be part of at this time of the year.
