Now that all the main attractions in Shropshire are open this is a great time to visit. Why not take advantage of one of the two Bank Holidays this month to come to the county. With the weather improving and the county still relatively quiet this is a good time to visit. This month I focus on some of the events being held over the bank Holidays as well as a news item regarding Clive of India.
Clun Greenman Festival http://www.clun.org.uk/greenman/index.htm The Greenman is a figure celebrated throughout Europe and in this variation the small village of Clun stages a battle between the Ice Maiden (representing Winter) and the Greenman (representing Spring) on the ancient Clun Bridge. The site has full details of the festival, which takes place 30 April - 1st May, and will include a craft fare and music. There are also details of accommodation as well as a history of the Greenman. English Haydn Festival At the end of the month Bridgnorth holds a festival celebrating the work of Haydn. The site gives full details of the programme, which also includes works by Mozart among others, as well as booking information and a seating plan. Thoughtfully the site also includes details of accommodation in the area. The festival takes place 28th May - 5th June and is a must for all lovers of classical music. Ironbridge Gorge Museum http://www.virtual-shropshire.co.uk/news... Blist Hill is holding a Steam Weekend on 1st - 2nd May. The main feature of the exhibits will be Coalbrookdale Locomotive that pre-dates the more famous Stephenson's Rocket by over 20 years. The site gives details of other events being held at Blist Hill over the month. Secret Hills Discovery Centre http://www.virtual-shropshire.co.uk/news... This site has details of the first Festival of Discovery that will take place 14th May - 23rd May at the Secret Hills Discovery Centre. This event will allow local groups to participate in what is being called the "Landscape and People". Local history groups and others are being encouraged to display what they have to offer local people. Wrekin Barrel Race http://www.wrekinbarrelrace.info/ On a much lighter note this site has details of a rather bizar race up the Wrekin Hill. The object of the race is for a team of four to get a full 9 gallon beer barrel to the top of the Wrekin. The race takes place on the 16th May and will raise money for local good causes. Why not think about taking part or becoming a sponsor. I am just wondering what happens to the beer at the top. Go To Page: 1 2
