Looking back over some of my previous articles, I seem to have concentrated much of them on the south of the county. It is a beautiful area, and worthy of a visit, but to have ignored the north of the county is a serious error. The north of Shropshire has a feel all its own and has a wonderful mix of landscapes: from impressive sandstone hills to lakes and meres reminiscent of the Lake District.
Among this wonderful landscape are some of the prettiest small towns in England. I particularly enjoy visiting Wem but there is also Ellesmere, Whitchurch, and Market Drayton. The link below will give you a chance to explore some of Shropshire's undiscovered gems and, I hope, entice you to visit this wonderful county. North Shropshire http://www.shropshiretourism.info/norths... Wellington Literary Festival http://www.wellington-shropshire.gov.uk/ With a growing reputation, the Wellington Literary Festival has become the major event in the county each October. Events this year range from Kate Adie, the renowned television reporter, launching her book "Corsets to Camouflage: Women at War" to talks on John Betjeman and a bewildered P G Wodehouse talking about his work. Add in some jazz and local history, and it is clear that this is a festival to be reckoned with. Details of the many events as well as venues around Wellington can be found at the link above. Shrewsbury Museum Service The Arts of War and the Arts of Peace http://www.shrewsburymuseums.com/news/ho... I have mentioned this site before, but I thought that as this exhibition comes to a close on the 11th of October, I would bring it to your attention once again. Covering the era of the Battle of Shrewsbury as well as modern warfare, it deals with issues of conflict and peace. Severn Valley Railway - Special Events http://www.svr.co.uk/specialevents.html This month the SVR has two special events. First is the Diesel Gala taking place on the 3 to 5 October using some of the SVR's historic diesels. Then on the 12th of October, there is a Classic Car and Bike Day when there will be displays at various stations on the line. BBC Shropshire http://www.bbc.co.uk/shropshire/history/... Once again the BBC Shropshire site has some interesting items. Currently you can vote for the Greatest Midlander and there is an impressive list of Shropshire's famous names including Charles Darwin, Clive of India, Thomas Telford and Billy Wright among others. There is also a very interesting piece on the Battle of Blore Heath, which I have to confess to knowing little about. There are also items on Ludlow and its part in the Civil War and on Thomas Telford. Go To Page: 1 2
