When he was back home again, the poor wood-cutter carefully hid the feather under the donkey's saddle and took it for a walk. The donkey walked about the yard for a while and, suddenly, his right hoof fell. The poor donkey started to hop around and made a sad picture to look at. The wood-cutter decided to take him to the blacksmith who made the best hoofs in town.
The blacksmith, too, had a donkey and had left the animal outside his workshop. While he put the new hoof on the wood-cutter's donkey, his own donkey started to bray loudly. The wood-cutter's donkey answered it. But suddenly ! A golden coin fell out of its nose ! The coin rolled down the stairs and fell in the basement. The blacksmith could hardly believe his eyes and said : « Wooow, I've never seen such a curious donkey before ! Hey, wood-cutter, go down to the basement and take your coin ! Over there, on the shelf, there is a candle. Light it from the fire and go down ! » While the wood-cutter searched for the coin, the blacksmith brought his own donkey inside and put the wood-cutter's donkey on its place. The wood-cutter never saw the difference and went back home with the blacksmith's donkey. He tied the animal in the stables and sat down on a chair in front to wait for the donkey to bray once more. At last, the donkey started to bray but there was no golden coin this time. « The blacksmith has changed the donkeys ! He's given me his own and kept mine ! » the wood-cutter was outraged but could do nothing about it because he was so poor and no one would listen to him. So, off he went to the forest again ! He tolf the bird the whole truth and started to weep. The bird tought for a little while and decided to give him the third and last feather it had. Then, the bird said : « Now, don't cry ! Listen, go home, put that feather under your table and knock once on the table with a wooden spoon ! You'll see that something marvellous will happen ! » The wood-cutter ran back to his house and did as the bird had explained. He put the deather under the table, knocked once with his spoon and what a marvel ! Suddenly, a meal appeared on it ! There was food for a whole feast and he could invite twenty people if he wanted . The poor man knocked once more and there it came, wine for a grand feast !
