TRUTH LIVES IN STRANGE PLACES

from you regarding me? I am not responsible for my action, God is, so let him take his complaint to God."

No one in the court had a reply to these statements, including the man who has made them, so Bahlool was released without any punishment, free to defend his beliefs another day.

II. False Humility

There once was a merchant who wanted to build a mosque in order to gain more respect amongst the people. He made sure it was a grand mosque and hinted discreetly when he could about his 'noble' intentions in this activity.

On the day the mosque was complete, the man walked around speaking loudly of the fact that he had built the mosque for the sake of God's pleasure.

That night, Bahlool scratched out a plaque saying that he had built the mosque and hung it on the front door. When the merchant saw it the next morning, he was furious! He rushed to Bahlool and accused him of being a liar and trespassing.

"If you truly built the mosque for God," Bahlool replied. "It should make difference to you who takes credit for it. And if it bothers you, the you should understand that you have built it to impress the people."

This simple story is used most often to teach the principles of humility and sincerity in Muslim children.

Next month, we'll look at some more stories from the life of Bahlool, the Sane! :)
