Shareware Arcades

Everyone loves the arcades. With the surging popularity of new versions of older computer games, this week's focus will be arcade-type shareware games. Descriptions come from C/Net's Download.com site.

Ultranium 2000 - "Ultranium 2000 is an Arkanoid clone for the newest generation of computers. This video game uses colorful 3D bitmaps and stereo sound for fun gameplay. Sometimes it rains bonuses. It allows you to play with a friend in real time, and it also has a multiplayer mode." Registration is $15.

TZ-Alien Attack - "TZ-Alien Attack is an arcade game similar to Space Invaders, except the aliens go in all directions and your ship can move anywhere. You have to break through the lines of hostile aliens and return to earth. This is a game for joystick artists, and it can be challenging." Registration is $25.

Table Tennis II - "Dirk Vander Wilt's Table Tennis II is a computer tennis game that's similar to Pong. It's actually quite difficult, but the goal is simple: beat your computer opponent to ten points. However, that's easier said than done. You can also play a two-player game while the computer keeps track of the score." Registration is only $5.

Space Labyrinth - "The purpose of this game is to move a spacecraft through a labyrinth in order to reach a space station. But, to do this, it will be necessary to destroy your enemies and pick up the red diamond. Space Labyrinth consists of five levels, but this trial version will only allow you to play the first one." Registration is $20.

Space Junkie - "This game is loosely based on the classic arcade game Galaxian. Like most arcade games of this nature, the premise is simple enough: use your spaceship to blast wave after wave of baddies before they blast you, and then move on to the next level. Among the features worth noting are smooth graphics and gameplay, and sound effects. Best of all, it's lightning-fast to download (130K) and requires no setup." Registration is $15.
