There are lots of different email programs out there to be had. Some are free, some are not. If you have Netscape Communicator or Microsoft Internet Explorer as most people do, the chances are pretty good that you might have used Netscape Mail or Microsoft Outlook or Outlook Express at one point or another. Or, if you've had problems with those programs, (as I have had!), you might have used Qualcomm's free Eudora Lite, which is probably one of the most popular free email programs to be had.
However, if you've ever felt a hidden desire to spice up your email, or if just want a little more than most traditional email programs offer, you might want to try some of these shareware programs:

You can add dancing or singing cartoon characters to your email with this neat little program. It will automatically play the script animations you add, as long as your recipient has an HTML-capable mail reader. The script functions are built in, so you don't have to know how to write the scripts yourself. - Deadletter 1.12 - 850K
This is a plug-in for Eudora Pro 3.05 or 4.0, but it also works with Eudora Lite. It provides a more extensive criteria to scan your incoming messages for spam. - Poco 1.1 - 1007K
Poco 1.1 is an entire email program which costs only $25 for the registered version. It can handle multiple mail accounts, high-level scripting, and HTML. The staff at CNET liked it so much they gave it a special endorsement at the bottom of the download page! - Agent-e 2.0 - 119K
This tiny little program was designed to take up very little space on your system, while providing a useful service. It will let you check multiple email accounts without even starting your email application. It gives you a list of everyone who has sent you email, allowing you to see for yourself if you even want to start your email application! The full version only costs $10. - Calypso 3.00 - 4.1MB
This popular program supports unlimited email accounts and an unlimited number of users. It includes lots of filters, message templates, and supports HTML email. - Email Chomper 2.0 - 1.6MB
Most people, at one point or another, have had an annoying person send a huge attachment which jammed up their email program so they couldn't download anything. This program will search your server for such attachments and catch the problem before you try to download it. It also will filter out spam.
