Sage, either Salvia or Artemisia can be used for cleansing sacred space, cleansing the self or objects. Below is a Smudging ceremony adapted from “Dancing with the Wheel” by Sun Bear, Wabun Wind, and Crystalis Mulligan.

It takes about five minutes or longer if in a group.

You will need Sage, Sweetgrass, cedar, or tobacco alone or in combination; a shell abalone or other large shell, a feather chosen special of smudging, matches or a lighter. Use a smudge stick if you have that, but make sure you have something to catch ash.

Place herbs in the shell and light them. Gently put out the flame so the herbs smolder and smoke.

Hold the bowl and draw the smoke, with your hand or feather, to your heart, then over your head, down your arms, down the front of your body, then down your back. Always move towards the ground. Do this three times. If you wish to cleanse/heal a specific part of your body waft the smoke to that part. Imagine it healed and clean.

The plants help in the cleansing but it is important to remember that you are cleansing your self. It’s in your power.

Next offer the smoke to the directions: North, East, South, and West, up to the Creator and down to Earth Mother.

After you have smudged yourself hand the bowl to the next person and have them repeat the process. You can also walk around the room you are in and smudge the walls and corners.

Also smudge any tools or objects you wish too now.

Allow the herbs in the bowl to burn out. Or press the smudge stick into a dish of sand or dry dirt to put out the flame.

You are done.
