The Comedy of Errors, which is William Shakespeare's shortest play, was written in 1591. It is the story of two sets of twin brothers separated at birth. One set of twins (Dromio of Ephesus and Dromio of Syracuse) are the attendants of another set of twins (Antipholus of Ephesus and Antipholus of Syracuse). The play describes what happens when they all end up in the same town at the same time.
This article is just a listing of the various versions of the film that I managed to find information about. The first film version of The Comedy of Errors was a musical version, The Boys from Syracuse from 1940. It was originally a broadway play, written by Richard Rodgers and George Abbot. This filmed version was written by Charles Grayson; the songs were written by Rodgers and Lorenz Hart. The film starred Allen Jones, Joe Penner, Rosemary Lane, and Martha Raye. The first filmed, non-musical, version of The Comedy of Errors is a television version from 1954. It was directed by Lionel Harris. It starred Paul Hansard and David Peel as the twins. Joan Plowright played Adriana. The next version I found was another television version of the play from 1964. It was directed by Peter Duguid and Clifford Williams. It starred Alex McCowen and Ian Richardson as the twins Antipholus, Diana Rigg played Adriana. The next version was also a television production. It featured the Royal Shakespeare Company and was done as a musical. It was directed by Philip Casson and Trevor Nunn. The twins Antipholus were played by Roger Rees and Mike Gwilym. Judi Dench played Adriana. The next version is a television version from Russia entitled Komediya oshibok. It starred Mikhail Kozakov and Mikhail Kononov. The next version is from 1983 and is yet another television production. It was directed by James Cellan Jones. It starred Michael Kitchen as the Antipholus twins and Roger Daltrey as the Dromios twins. Another television production of the play was produced in 1985.
