Special Thanks
The many illustrations of the variations found in the genus Amorphophallus would not have been possible without Alan Galloway's generous permission to use his fantastic images. Many thanks, Alan! Those used represent only a small portion of the images on his site. To see more, visit his Amorphophallus pages.
Thanks also to the IAS and the members of Aroid-L, whose collective wisdom provided most of the facts published in this article.
Titan arum bloom sequence at Fairchild Garden in 1998. The page has detailed photos and a chronology of the bloom sequence...most interesting.
Alan Galloway's Amorphophallus page links to images of the many species he grows in his fabulous garden in Raleigh, NC. Most species pages show the inflorescence in many stages - often with cut-away views of the spath showing the male and female flowers - as well as stem, foliage and berries.
Krzysztof Kozminski's Amorphophallus image page is another source for images of many species.
They can sometimes be found on Ebay. The prices are sometimes below "market
value", sometimes not. It is best to buy plants while they are dormant.
And, last, but not least, if you're interested in Amorphophallus or any aroid, join the IAS (International Aroid Society). Spend some time on the web site; there's a wealth of information there with links to more. You can also find out how to subscribe to Aroid-L and where to read the list archives.
