Located in Dartmouth, Massachusetts, Avant Gardens is a small family run nursery owned and operated by Chris and Kathy Tracey, locally noted horticulturists who propagate what they sell. The nursery, greenhouses and display gardens surround the 18th century farmhouse where they live and work.

Their focus is on growing unusual plants ranging from alpines through perennials to woody plants. They also have a marvelous selection of annuals and tender perennials, perfect for creating the lush, tropical look so popular today. If you're looking for ideas for containers (aren't we always?) their Container Combinations links to several photos that will set your mouth watering - all with lists of the plants used.

They offer lectures and workshops for novice and experienced gardeners; see their calendar page for a schedule as well as other information including directions to their nursery, should you wish to visit.

You'll find their web site easy to navigate and fast loading. There are several ways to view their listings. You can select a category from the headings at the top of the page, which will take you to an introductory page with a keyword search function. In a scroll box in the left navigation column you'll find a list of all the plants in that category. Selecting one will turn up either that plant - if there's only one - or a link list for each species in the genus listed. Or, you can select a letter from the alphabet listing across the top of the page and you'll get a page listing everything under that letter.

If you're in a hurry and you know what you're looking for, select the little magnifying glass search icon and you'll be presented with a keyword search function that also gives you a category option.

One particularly nice feature allows you to develop a wish list when you use the 'all category' alphabetical listing. Check the box in front of the plants you're interested in and then hit the 'compare items' button at the bottom of the page. You'll get a list of those items you've checked so you can cogitate on them before adding them to your shopping cart. Another nice touch...they have put a 'sold out' notice where appropriate so you do not waste time trying to order something that is no longer available...I wish all online nurseries did this!

Each plant has a brief description, including USDA hardiness zone limit. A small camera icon indicates whether there's an image available for each plant - and there are a lot of images on the site to help you if you don't know what a plant looks like.
